Unexplained Stories
For 15 Minutes, a Couple Said the B3157 Became a Road From Another Time
In September 2014, a couple was driving along the B3157 near Abbotsbury, England, when they noticed something strange.
The road looked older than it should. Its surface seemed rougher, familiar signs were missing, and the surrounding countryside had taken on an unfamiliar appearance.
They hadn’t made a wrong turn. Their car was running normally, and they were still following the route they knew.
Yet for approximately fifteen minutes, they believed they were driving through another time.
The Changes Happened Gradually
There was no flash of light, sudden noise, or mysterious doorway marking the beginning of the experience. According to the couple, the transformation happened so gradually that they couldn’t identify exactly when things began to look different.
Modern features seemed to disappear from the roadside. Even the surface beneath their wheels appeared to belong to an earlier period.
The couple continued driving, expecting to recognize something that would explain where they were. But nothing familiar appeared.
What made the experience especially unsettling was that they hadn’t knowingly left the B3157. The strange landscape had apparently come to them.
An Old Road Through Historic Countryside
The B3157 runs along the Dorset coast, connecting communities between the Weymouth and Bridport areas. Near Abbotsbury, it passes through rolling countryside, old villages, and landscapes that have changed relatively little over generations.
Ancient settlements and historic routes are scattered throughout the region. Modern drivers can travel past fields and buildings with histories stretching back centuries.
The area also has some unusual road features. In the years before the couple’s experience, sections of the B3157 had undergone changes to their markings.
After resurfacing work, some centre lines weren’t replaced. Others were deliberately removed as part of efforts to reduce visual clutter and encourage drivers to pay closer attention.
In January 2014, Dorset officials voted to restore centre markings in selected locations. Different sections of the road could therefore look noticeably different, particularly to someone accustomed to more heavily marked highways. But the couple remembered changes extending far beyond the painted lines.
Another Driver Had Seen Something Strange
Just weeks before the reported time slip, another motorist described an unsettling encounter along the same road. On August 31, 2014, a driver traveling near Abbotsbury, Portesham, and Chickerell reportedly saw a dark, human-shaped figure run across the road at approximately two in the morning.
According to an account recorded by the Paranormal Database, the driver braked sharply to avoid hitting it. The figure continued toward the roadside, but something peculiar happened as the witness watched.
Its legs appeared to disappear first, followed by the rest of its body. The driver was left staring at an empty road.
This was a separate report involving a different witness, but the timing was remarkable. Within weeks, two motorists had described experiences that made the same stretch of highway seem much stranger than an ordinary coastal route.
The Modern World Returned
The couple said their experience ended as quietly as it began. Gradually, the countryside started looking familiar again. Road signs and other recognizable features returned, and the surface beneath their wheels appeared normal.
They hadn’t passed through a tunnel or crossed any visible boundary. At some point, the landscape simply became the one they expected.
The couple couldn’t identify a precise location where the change had ended. Their strongest memory was that they had continued driving forward throughout the encounter.
That left them with an unsettling problem. There was no particular junction or landmark they could return to and investigate.
Fifteen Minutes Without an Explanation
Time-slip stories often involve someone entering an old building, turning a corner, or suddenly finding themselves surrounded by people dressed in clothing from another century. The B3157 account was different.
The couple remained inside their car, moving along a road they believed they knew. Nothing happened to the vehicle itself, and they described no sensation of being transported anywhere.
Their experience was of watching the surroundings change while their own journey continued. The account had no photographs or recorded route that would allow anyone to reconstruct those fifteen minutes.
But the road itself remained exactly where it had always been.
And the couple could never identify where the present had disappeared.
