Unexplained Stories
Small Creatures Surrounded Their Farmhouse for Hours
Something was moving toward the farmhouse, and Elmer Sutton didn’t like the look of it.
The figure was small, with a large head, enormous eyes and arms that seemed far too long for its body. As it approached, Sutton and another man grabbed their guns and fired.
According to the witnesses, the creature reacted to the shots but didn’t fall. It retreated into the darkness, leaving the men staring after it.
On the night of August 21, 1955, a family living near Kelly, Kentucky, found themselves facing something they had never encountered before. And the visitors weren’t finished with them.
It Started With a Light in the Sky
Earlier that evening, Billy Ray Taylor had stepped outside the farmhouse to get a drink of water. While he was outside, he noticed a bright object moving across the sky. He watched it travel toward the ground beyond the property and disappear behind the trees.
Taylor hurried inside and told the others that something unusual had just landed nearby. The family wasn’t particularly impressed. Some thought he had simply seen a shooting star.
About an hour later, the dogs began barking. Taylor and Elmer “Lucky” Sutton went outside to investigate.
That’s when they spotted the small figure approaching the house. According to their descriptions, it stood roughly three to four feet tall, with a round head, large ears and eyes that reflected the light. Its thin arms extended almost to the ground, ending in hands with long fingers. The men had never seen anything like it.
The Creatures Kept Coming Back
After the first encounter, the family retreated inside and began watching the windows. Before long, another figure appeared. The men fired again, but the creature vanished from sight.
Similar figures soon appeared at different sides of the house. Some witnesses described the beings moving in an unusual way, almost floating when they jumped or dropped from higher places. Others remembered their enormous eyes, which seemed to shine whenever light fell on them.
The family reported seeing several of the creatures at once. They appeared near windows, moved through the yard and climbed onto parts of the building.
Nobody inside knew how many there were. Each time the men thought the visitors had gone, another would appear somewhere else.
Something Reached Down From the Roof
One of the most frightening moments reportedly happened when Taylor stepped outside beneath an overhanging section of the porch roof. According to witnesses, a long arm suddenly reached down from above him. A hand appeared near his head.
People inside the house shouted and pulled Taylor away while Sutton fired toward the roof. Another creature was reportedly spotted sitting in a nearby tree. When the men shot at it, witnesses described it dropping or floating toward the ground before disappearing.
The family became convinced that the creatures were trying to surround them. They moved between rooms, watching different windows and listening for movement outside. The men kept their guns nearby while the women and children remained inside.
Hours passed without the visitors staying away for long. Eventually, the family decided they couldn’t remain there any longer.
The Family Went Straight to the Police
Shortly before 11 p.m., the frightened group drove into nearby Hopkinsville and asked the police for help. Their story sounded extraordinary. They claimed strange little beings had surrounded their home and that the men had been firing at them for hours.
But the officers could see that the people in front of them were badly shaken. Hopkinsville officers were joined by Kentucky State Police, county deputies and military police from nearby Fort Campbell.
The group drove out toward Kelly to investigate. Officers searched the property, examined the house and looked for anything that might explain the family’s experience.
They found signs that guns had been fired, including damage around the building. But the strange visitors were nowhere to be seen.
The Police Left, and the Creatures Returned
Investigators continued searching into the early morning before eventually leaving the property. The family hoped the ordeal was over, but according to their account, the small figures began appearing again after the officers departed. The renewed sightings reportedly continued until shortly before dawn, when the mysterious visitors finally stopped returning.
By morning, the exhausted family had spent much of the night frightened inside their own home. Their experience was already attracting attention from local newspapers. Reporters began interviewing the witnesses, and the story quickly spread beyond Kentucky. Before long, people across the country were reading about the strange creatures that had supposedly surrounded a rural farmhouse.
The Little Green Men of Kentucky
Newspapers and later retellings began calling the creatures “little green men.” But the family’s original descriptions weren’t quite so simple. Witnesses described small bodies, large heads, thin limbs and enormous eyes.
Some remembered pointed ears, while others emphasized the strange way the creatures moved. The beings were eventually given a nickname that stuck: the Hopkinsville Goblins.
Artists began drawing them with huge eyes, long arms and oversized heads, creating one of the most recognizable images in UFO history. The case also became unusual because so many people claimed to have witnessed the same events.
Rather than a single person reporting a fleeting glimpse of something strange, an entire household described repeated encounters over several hours. The police had arrived while the family was still frightened, giving investigators an opportunity to interview witnesses and inspect the property immediately afterward.
Kelly Never Forgot That Night
The tiny community of Kelly eventually became famous for the encounter. Decades later, local celebrations began commemorating the strange visitors, drawing UFO enthusiasts and curious travelers to the area. The creatures inspired artwork, souvenirs and countless retellings of the family’s experience.
But the original witnesses weren’t celebrating anything on that August night. They were frightened people who believed something unfamiliar was moving around their home.
The family had called the police because they wanted the visitors gone.
By sunrise, they finally were.
