Unexplained Stories
Someone Uploaded Tens of Thousands of Meaningless Videos to YouTube
On April 5, 2015, a strange YouTube channel began uploading videos that seemed to have no purpose whatsoever.
Some lasted only a few seconds. Others showed a single colored dot against a plain background. A few contained high-pitched noises, distorted voices, or strings of numbers spoken by a man nobody could identify. The channel was called Unfavorable Semicircle.
At first, hardly anyone noticed. But the videos kept coming, one after another, at a pace that eventually became almost impossible to follow.
By February 2016, approximately 72,000 videos had appeared. And when curious viewers started examining them together, they discovered things that weren’t visible in the individual clips.
A YouTube Channel Unlike Anything Else
The account had been created in March 2015, with its first known video appearing the following month. Many early uploads featured the Sagittarius symbol in their titles, followed by long strings of numbers. There were no introductions, explanations, or attempts to entertain an audience.
One recording reportedly lasted around eleven hours and consisted largely of silence. According to Atlas Obscura, the channel was initially posting a little more than one video every ten minutes. By early February 2016, the pace had accelerated to several videos per minute.
Whoever controlled the account seemed determined to keep feeding material into YouTube, regardless of whether anyone was watching. That was when internet detectives began getting seriously interested.
Viewers Started Taking the Videos Apart
Communities on Reddit and other websites began collecting uploads, examining their titles, and comparing their audio. Two videos attracted particular attention. They were called LOCK and DELOCK, names that sounded suspiciously like instructions.
Instead of watching the clips individually, some investigators began stacking or arranging video frames. The results were fascinating.
Images that looked like meaningless visual noise sometimes produced larger, more organized pictures when combined. One composite associated with a sequence called HARVEST contained text connected to Wikipedia’s article about art.
Other investigations uncovered repeating symbols, fragments of recognizable imagery, and references to astronomy. Perhaps the clips were pieces of something larger, deliberately scattered across thousands of uploads.
Theories Started Flying
One of the first comparisons was to another mysterious YouTube account called Webdriver Torso. That channel had spent years uploading short videos of colored rectangles accompanied by simple electronic tones.
People initially suspected coded messages or secret communications. Google eventually revealed that Webdriver Torso was associated with internal video-quality testing. Could Unfavorable Semicircle be another automated testing system?
Some viewers thought so. Others believed the recurring symbols and unusual audio suggested something more elaborate.
One popular theory involved an alternate-reality game, an interactive puzzle that used websites, videos, and hidden clues to lead players toward a solution. Another possibility was a modern numbers station.
Traditional numbers stations broadcast groups of letters or digits over shortwave radio, often without identifying who is transmitting or who is supposed to receive the message. The mysterious male voice reading letters and numbers made that comparison especially tempting. Despite months of investigation, nobody managed to produce a convincing explanation for the entire channel.
YouTube Suddenly Pulled the Plug
On February 22, 2016, Atlas Obscura published a detailed investigation into Unfavorable Semicircle. Three days later, the BBC brought the story to an even larger audience. On February 25, 2016, the original account was suspended.
The timing sent the online community into overdrive. Thousands of videos had disappeared just as people around the world were beginning to examine them.
Some suspected the account had violated YouTube’s rules because of its extraordinary upload volume. Others wondered whether the sudden publicity had prompted the removal.
Fortunately, dedicated investigators had already preserved a substantial collection of videos. The channel was gone, but the investigation wasn’t finished.
Clues Continued Appearing After the Shutdown
Related accounts and social-media activity extended the mystery beyond the original channel’s disappearance. Investigators began comparing this newer material with the surviving uploads, looking for recurring names, symbols, and patterns that might connect the accounts.
The enormous archive presented a peculiar problem. Even with dedicated volunteers examining it, there was far more material than any individual could reasonably study.
Some sequences appeared carefully structured. Others seemed entirely disconnected from everything around them.
And because the original channel had vanished, viewers couldn’t always tell whether missing videos contained important clues or were simply more of the same strange material. Years passed without anyone publicly establishing who was responsible. Then, in 2022, someone finally stepped forward.
Seven Years Later, Someone Claimed Responsibility
In June 2022, an anonymous social-media account appeared claiming to be the creator of Unfavorable Semicircle. The explanation was unexpected.
According to the account, the channel had been a form of outsider art, an unconventional creative project built around strange imagery, enormous quantities of material, and deliberate confusion. The creator said part of the objective had been to upload an extraordinary number of videos while producing something difficult for viewers to understand.
Webdriver Torso had reportedly been one of the inspirations. That would explain why some sequences contained recognizable material while others appeared to follow a private set of rules.
There didn’t necessarily have to be one secret message tying everything together. The sprawling collection could itself have been the creative work.
But the anonymous explanation left plenty of room for curiosity. It didn’t identify the person behind the project or provide a complete guide to the recordings.
The Creator Had One More Surprise
The account claiming responsibility also described a project that had grown beyond its original boundaries.
What began as an experiment in making strange videos had attracted an audience willing to spend years studying them. Some viewers had become deeply invested in finding a solution, even though the person behind the channel apparently hadn’t designed a conventional puzzle with a final answer. That created an unusual situation for the anonymous creator.
The audience was searching for instructions that might never have existed.
And the person who could explain everything had chosen to remain anonymous.
