Something Wolf-Like Ran Across a Duluth Road. Its Body Made No Sense
On November 7, 2016, a woman was driving along Maple Grove Road outside Duluth, Minnesota, when a large black animal suddenly ran across the pavement in front of her. Its head looked something like a wolf’s, but the rest of its body was strange. The front legs were much longer than the back legs, giving it a steeply sloping back and an awkward way of running.
The woman was a professional graphic designer and wildlife artist. She was familiar with animal anatomy, but she couldn’t think of anything that looked quite like what she had just seen.
Something Came Out of the Darkness
The woman was 41 years old and travelling through an area where the houses gradually gave way to farmland and woods. An old barn stood beyond the road, surrounded by fields and patches of swampy ground.
It was a cloudy night, with much of the moonlight hidden. The weather was unusually mild for November, and deer were active in the surrounding countryside.
As she drove, something large and dark appeared on her right. It ran across the road toward the field near the barn, moving quickly enough that she had only seconds to study it.
At first, the animal’s head made her think of a wolf or a very large dog. It had a long muzzle, small pointed ears and a distinctly canine appearance. But when she looked at the rest of it, things became much harder to explain.
Its Front Legs Looked Far Too Long
The animal’s shoulders stood unusually high, while its body sloped sharply downward toward its hindquarters. Its muscular front legs appeared dramatically longer than the rear ones.
The difference gave it an odd running motion. According to the woman, the front legs reached forward somewhat like a deer’s, but the movement was much stiffer and less graceful.
It almost looked injured, although it was moving remarkably fast. She didn’t see it walking on its knuckles or moving like an ape, and it never stood upright during her encounter.
She estimated its size at around seven feet, making it far larger than the animals she was accustomed to seeing around Duluth. Its fur was another unusual feature, appearing so intensely black that it almost blended into the darkness.
The eyes seemed to reflect an orange colour. She couldn’t get over the combination of that familiar canine face and the strangely built body beneath it.
Another Car Gave Her a Better Look
For a moment, she wondered whether the darkness was making the animal appear different from what it really was. After all, she was watching a moving shape at night, with little time to judge its size.
But another vehicle was approaching from farther down the road. As its headlights came into view, they briefly shone through the spaces between the animal’s legs.
The woman later described that moment to researcher Linda Godfrey. The approaching lights gave her a clearer outline of the creature as it crossed, allowing her to see the unusual height of its shoulders and the way its legs moved.
Then the animal disappeared into the field. The entire encounter had lasted only seconds, but the woman was badly frightened by what she had seen.
She Was Too Frightened to Go Home
The experience stayed with her long after the creature vanished. She described an overwhelming feeling of fear, unlike anything she remembered experiencing during an ordinary encounter with wildlife.
She was so shaken that she ended up sitting at a brightly lit gas station, waiting for her husband to get home. Even there, surrounded by ordinary people and lights, she couldn’t shake the feeling.
Before that night, she had enjoyed camping, hiking and spending time outdoors. Afterward, she became reluctant to enter the woods or drive alone after dark.
She eventually contacted Linda Godfrey, who had spent years collecting reports of unusual wolf-like creatures across the Midwest. The woman wanted to understand what she had seen. And because she was a wildlife artist, she had a useful way of trying to work it out.
She Drew the Creature From Memory
Rather than relying on a description alone, the woman began drawing the animal. She paid close attention to its body proportions, including the high shoulders, long front legs and steeply sloping back.
She also made comparison drawings of familiar animals, including wolves, bears, deer and moose. Using their normal body shapes and approximate sizes, she tried to find something that matched what she remembered.
None of her comparisons satisfied her. She eventually began calling the animal the Bray Road Creature, after the well-known reports of unusual wolf-like creatures in Wisconsin.
About a week after the sighting, she returned to Maple Grove Road during daylight. She wanted to examine the surroundings and see whether the location offered any clues.
The road passed through birch woods and swampy terrain, with the field and old barn visible beyond it. She took pictures of the area, but there were no obvious tracks to examine along the paved road.
Returning helped her understand exactly where the animal had gone. It did little to ease her curiosity about what she had seen.
Godfrey published the account on November 22, 2016, along with the woman’s drawings. She found the report especially interesting because the witness had experience drawing animals and had made such a careful effort to record the unusual proportions.
Her Sister Had Seen Something Too
While trying to understand the encounter, the woman spoke with her sister about what had happened. Her sister lived in the area, and the description apparently sounded familiar.
According to the account she gave Godfrey, her sister said she had seen a similar creature near her own home several years earlier. Her former boyfriend and another friend had been with her at the time. The three of them had reportedly watched an enormous, wolf-like creature standing at the edge of a field.
Its eyes were red, and it was watching them from a distance.
But unlike the animal that ran across Maple Grove Road, this one was standing on two legs.
