Unexplained Stories
He Drove Into Green Fog on the M6. Thirty-Seven Minutes Vanished
Late one night in November 2018, a motorist was reportedly driving north along Britain’s M6 motorway through Staffordshire when he noticed something unusual ahead. A thick bank of fog stretched across the road, but it wasn’t the usual grey or white. It had a strange greenish colour.
The driver, described in later accounts as a software engineer, continued toward it. Fog wasn’t unusual on British roads, and he expected to be through it within moments. But almost as soon as he entered, the motorway began to change.
The Traffic Disappeared
According to the account, the first thing the driver noticed was that the other vehicles seemed to have vanished. The red taillights ahead disappeared, along with the headlights travelling in the opposite direction.
Even the familiar glow of motorway signs and roadside lighting became difficult to see. The road was still beneath his wheels, but everything around it appeared strangely empty.
He continued driving, expecting to catch up with another vehicle or see some indication that traffic was moving normally. Instead, the greenish mist seemed to surround the car completely.
There was something unsettling about being alone on a motorway that normally carried thousands of vehicles. The driver couldn’t remember passing an exit or taking a different road. As far as he could tell, he was still following the M6 north.
Something Was Wrong Inside the Car
The strange conditions apparently weren’t limited to what he could see through the windscreen. According to later versions of the story, the car’s GPS stopped updating. The navigation display appeared to freeze, leaving the driver without the usual information about his location.
His mobile phone reportedly lost its connection or stopped responding normally. The dashboard display also behaved strangely, with some accounts describing an unexpected reset.
For someone accustomed to working with technology, several electronic systems behaving oddly at once would have been especially difficult to ignore. Yet the car itself continued running, and the driver could still steer along the road.
Stopping on a motorway in thick fog carried its own risks, especially with visibility so poor. He kept going, hoping the unusual conditions would soon pass.
The Fog Began to Clear
The driver reportedly felt that only a few minutes had passed before the greenish mist started thinning. Other vehicles appeared ahead and on the opposite carriageway, and the familiar surroundings of the motorway gradually returned.
Whatever had happened seemed to be over. But when the driver checked the time, he discovered something he couldn’t explain.
The clock was showing a time 37 minutes later than he expected. According to the account, he believed he had travelled less than two miles while surrounded by the fog. He had no recollection of pulling over, taking a diversion or spending a long period waiting anywhere along the route.
Even at a modest motorway speed, more than half an hour would normally carry a car a considerable distance. Yet the driver’s memory of the journey covered only a short stretch of road.
A Different Kind of Missing Time
Reports of missing time have appeared in UFO and paranormal accounts for decades. Some involve people returning from unusual encounters and discovering that hours have passed without their knowledge. Others describe familiar journeys taking far longer than expected.
The M6 story is unusual because the driver reportedly saw no mysterious aircraft or strange figures. Nothing suggested that he had left his vehicle or encountered anyone else.
He also remembered driving through the fog. There was no sudden blackout or completely forgotten stretch of the journey. From his perspective, he had simply continued along the motorway until the strange mist disappeared.
That makes the reported time difference especially peculiar. Rather than forgetting what happened, he apparently experienced a journey that seemed much shorter than the time recorded by the clock.
And the unusual colour of the fog added another element. Green-tinted mist is not something most motorists expect to encounter on an ordinary night drive, particularly when accompanied by apparent problems with electronic equipment.
Trying to Piece Together the Journey
After an experience like that, the natural reaction would be to look for something that could explain where those extra minutes went. Modern vehicles and mobile phones can preserve a surprising amount of information about a journey. GPS systems can record locations, phones may store activity histories, and vehicle electronics sometimes keep details about unexpected faults.
The circulating M6 story doesn’t identify the driver by name, and no original technical records have surfaced publicly. The unusual details come from later retellings rather than an independently documented firsthand account.
One part of the story, however, involves something the driver reportedly had with him throughout the journey: a dashboard camera. Unlike a person’s memory, a camera could potentially show what happened outside the vehicle. It might reveal whether the car slowed down, whether other traffic was present or whether anything unusual appeared through the windscreen.
The driver reportedly decided to examine the recordings after the incident. If the camera had continued working, it might have captured the very stretch of road he was trying to understand.
The Dashcam Recording
According to the story, the camera had been operating during the journey. The driver connected it to examine the footage, hoping to see exactly what had happened while the car was surrounded by the strange mist.
The camera’s storage contained recordings from the drive, including a file associated with the unexplained interval. That was encouraging, because it suggested there might be something more useful than his recollection of the experience. He reportedly began checking the files, looking for the point where the motorway had disappeared into the fog.
The recordings from before and after the strange encounter apparently played normally.
The file covering those 37 minutes wouldn’t open.
