Unexplained Stories
Loch Ness Had Six Sightings Last Year. In 2026, It Hit 15
On August 5, 2026, a visitor from Malta was watching Loch Ness near Fort Augustus when he spotted something moving through the water. Norbert Kawka thought it looked like an enormous eel. It repeatedly broke the surface, slipped beneath the water, and appeared to be swimming against the current.
He estimated its length at more than seven metres. Even more remarkably, Kawka said he watched the creature for approximately fifteen minutes. That summer, he wasn’t the only visitor leaving Loch Ness with an extraordinary story.
Nessie Was Having a Busy Year
The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register has been collecting accounts of unusual activity on the famous Scottish lake for years. In 2024, it recorded three in-person sightings. The following year, there were six.
By September 2026, the register listed fifteen reports, making it an unusually busy year for Nessie enthusiasts. Witnesses described dark shapes, unexplained movements, and objects that appeared briefly above the water. Several managed to capture photographs or videos.
Some encounters lasted only seconds. Others gave witnesses considerably longer to watch whatever had caught their attention.
The reports came from different parts of the loch, including the waters around Urquhart Castle and Fort Augustus. And several were remarkably detailed.
Twenty Seconds With Something Enormous
On August 21, German tourist Felix Tiekemeier was looking across the lake shortly before noon when he noticed a black shape near the surface. The object was approximately 300 metres away. Tiekemeier estimated that it was around six metres long and believed he could make out something resembling a head.
He watched it moving for approximately twenty seconds before it disappeared. That was enough time to take a photograph, which he submitted with his account. The encounter attracted attention because Tiekemeier had observed the shape moving rather than catching only a momentary glimpse.
He had also managed to record something that other people could examine afterward.
Fifteen Minutes Near Fort Augustus
Kawka’s August 5 experience was even more remarkable for its length. He first noticed the eel-like shape at approximately 8:50 p.m. Conditions were foggy, with light rain and almost no wind.
According to his report, the lake was calm, and there were no boats nearby. The object repeatedly surfaced and disappeared, creating a substantial disturbance in the water. Kawka believed it was moving against the current.
He took photographs during the encounter and described the animal as being at least seven metres long. It was an extraordinary account from someone who had plenty of time to observe what was happening. But another visitor would report something completely different just one day later.
Something Appeared Beneath Urquhart Castle
On August 6, Jocelyn Boyce was visiting Urquhart Castle with her family. The ruined fortress stands above one of the most famous stretches of Loch Ness, offering visitors a sweeping view across the water. Boyce noticed a dark, rounded shape protruding above the surface about half a mile away.
The lake was calm, and she managed to record approximately thirteen seconds of video using her iPhone 16. She also took photographs, including one showing the mysterious shape and another taken shortly after it disappeared. Boyce’s description was quite different from Kawka’s.
Instead of a long, eel-like body, she reported seeing something resembling a dark mound. It was another curious entry in a summer that seemed determined to give visitors something to talk about.
A Head, Two Humps, and Something Behind Them
On July 21, Australian visitor Oscar Gray reported an encounter near Urquhart Castle. He described a dark green shape with a flat top that resembled a head. Behind it, he saw two humps and a disturbance that he interpreted as a tail.
Gray managed to photograph part of the scene before the shapes disappeared beneath the surface. Two days later, another Australian visitor, a nine-year-old girl traveling aboard a cruise boat, photographed something she believed looked like a head emerging from the lake.
The variety of descriptions was fascinating. Some witnesses reported rounded objects, while others described long bodies or several shapes moving together. Visitors standing beside the same lake were coming away with very different impressions of what might be living beneath its surface.
A Cruiser Started Rocking
One of the more unusual reports came from four visitors from Wakefield on June 30. They were traveling toward Urquhart Bay aboard a cruiser when, according to their account, the boat suddenly began rocking strongly from side to side.
The group noticed a large disturbance ahead of them. They watched it move toward the shoreline for approximately a minute.
As the disturbance faded, a rounded, cream-coloured object reportedly appeared above the surface. It remained visible for roughly ten seconds before disappearing.
The witnesses believed something substantial had been moving nearby, possibly close enough to affect their boat. That made their account different from the distant sightings reported elsewhere around the loch.
They hadn’t simply seen something unusual. They believed they had felt its effects through the movement of their vessel.
A Legend That Refuses to Disappear
Stories about mysterious creatures in and around Loch Ness go back centuries. One of the oldest accounts is associated with Saint Columba in the sixth century, although the modern Nessie legend became internationally famous during the 1930s. Since then, people have reported strange wakes, dark humps, moving shapes, and objects appearing briefly above the surface.
The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register preserves these accounts, recording dates, locations, witness descriptions, and supporting images when available. Observations made through webcams are tracked separately from sightings reported by people physically present at the lake.
That approach makes it possible to compare the number of firsthand accounts from one year to another.
It also gives future investigators a substantial collection of photographs, videos, and witness descriptions to examine.
