Something Ran in Front of His Car. He Found It in an Ancient Legend

Something large came charging out of the bushes and ran straight across the road in front of his car.

The driver swerved to avoid it. For a few seconds, his headlights caught a heavy animal with dark reddish-brown fur, a broad head and short, powerful legs.

But what caught his attention was the tail. It was wide and flattened, unlike anything he expected to see on a Welsh country road.

The encounter happened on a wet October night in 2018, somewhere between Carmarthen and Llandeilo. The animal disappeared into the darkness before the driver could get another look. About eighteen months later, he stumbled across an old Welsh legend that sounded remarkably familiar.

An Encounter in the Darkness

The driver had been traveling through the Welsh countryside when the creature suddenly appeared in his headlights. There was barely time to react. He steered out of its path as the animal raced across the road and vanished into the vegetation on the other side.

The glimpse had lasted only seconds, but the size and appearance of the creature stayed with him. He had no photograph, and there was no opportunity to follow it into the darkness. All he had was the memory of something powerful and unfamiliar moving across the road. For months afterward, the encounter remained a mystery.

The Creature Called the Afanc

According to his later account, the driver eventually came across stories about a creature from Welsh folklore called the Afanc. The description immediately caught his attention.

The Afanc was said to inhabit lakes, rivers and deep pools across Wales. Some traditions portrayed it as an enormous aquatic beast, while others gave it a broad body and features resembling a giant beaver. The creature was often described as immensely strong, capable of frightening entire villages and dangerous to anyone who approached its home.

One curious detail was the name itself. Afanc is also a Welsh word associated with the beaver, an animal that once lived in the country’s waterways. But the creature of legend was far more fearsome than anything found in an ordinary river.

In some stories, it was powerful enough to drag people beneath the water. In others, entire communities struggled to find a way to capture it.

The Monster Beneath the Water

One of the best-known Afanc legends places the creature in a deep pool near Betws-y-Coed. The beast reportedly terrorized the surrounding countryside, and the people living nearby became desperate to remove it. Eventually, they devised an unusual plan.

A young woman approached the water and persuaded the creature to rest its head in her lap. While it slept, men crept forward and fastened heavy chains around its body.

The chains were attached to powerful oxen, which began dragging the enormous creature from the water. But the Afanc wasn’t easily captured.

It fought against the chains with extraordinary strength, struggling so fiercely that the animals pulling it were pushed to their limits. According to some versions, the creature was eventually hauled across the mountains and deposited in a remote lake, far from the people it had frightened.

Other tellings describe different endings, but the central image remains unforgettable: an enormous water creature fighting against a team of oxen.

King Arthur Meets the Afanc

Another famous version of the legend takes place near Llyn Barfog, a mountain lake above Aberdyfi. This time, King Arthur himself enters the story.

According to local tradition, Arthur encountered the Afanc and used his powerful horse to drag it from the lake. The struggle was so fierce that the horse supposedly left an enormous hoofprint in a nearby rock. The stone became known as Carn March Arthur, or the Stone of Arthur’s Horse.

The name survives in the Welsh landscape, connecting a real location with a story told across generations. It’s one of several places in Wales associated with the Afanc, suggesting just how widely the creature’s reputation once spread.

Some traditions describe the beast lurking beneath still water, waiting for anyone foolish enough to approach. Others portray it as an almost unstoppable force that could only be defeated through cunning or extraordinary strength.

A Creature Remembered for Centuries

Wales has a long tradition of stories about mysterious creatures living in its lakes and rivers. Some tales describe enormous serpents, while others involve strange animals emerging from the water or frightening travelers along remote paths. The Afanc holds a special place among them.

Unlike many legendary monsters, its descriptions sometimes include recognizable animal features. Its powerful body, association with water and unusual shape have fascinated storytellers for generations. There is also an intriguing piece of Welsh history behind the name.

Beavers once inhabited the country’s rivers and wetlands before disappearing centuries ago. Their presence survives in old records, place names and language.

The stories of the Afanc continued long after the landscape changed. Over the centuries, its reputation grew through tales of dangerous pools, powerful creatures and extraordinary encounters. Different villages developed their own versions, sometimes placing the Afanc in a particular lake or attaching its story to a familiar landmark.

The Legend Finds a New Witness

The driver had never heard of the Afanc when he reported seeing the strange animal in 2018. According to his account, he discovered the old stories roughly eighteen months after the encounter.

He had been looking for something that resembled what he’d seen and was startled by the descriptions. The connection was especially curious because his sighting hadn’t taken place beside a famous legendary lake. It had happened on an ordinary road between two Welsh towns.

Nothing about the location suggested he was about to become part of an ancient mystery. Yet the creature’s appearance had reminded him of something Welsh storytellers had been describing for generations.

The Afanc was no longer simply a monster in an old tale. To the driver, it had become a possible name for the strange animal that crossed his path.

The Waters Still Have Their Secrets

The Welsh countryside is filled with rivers, wooded valleys and remote stretches of water. Some of the places associated with the Afanc remain surprisingly quiet, their old stories preserved in local names and traditions. Llyn Barfog still sits among the hills above Aberdyfi, while the legends surrounding Betws-y-Coed continue to attract people interested in Welsh folklore.

Visitors can walk through the same landscapes where generations of storytellers imagined powerful creatures living beneath the surface. The driver’s encounter added an unexpected modern chapter to those traditions.

The old stories warned people to keep their distance from the Afanc’s waters.

Nobody said it couldn’t cross a road.
