Unexplained Stories
The Town That Wasn’t on Highway 93
Late one night in October 2015, a truck driver was reportedly traveling along Highway 93 through the Nevada desert when he noticed lights ahead. He had been driving for miles through almost complete darkness, and the sight of what looked like a gas station was a welcome surprise. He turned off the highway and pulled in.
The place looked strangely old-fashioned. There was a diner, gas pumps, and signs that seemed to belong to the 1950s or 1960s. It was as though somebody had kept an entire roadside stop running without changing anything for decades.
The driver got out and tried to fill his truck, but the pumps wouldn’t work. After several unsuccessful attempts, he climbed back into the cab and continued down the highway. He had no reason to think he’d encountered anything more unusual than an old gas station with broken equipment.
The Town Wasn’t Where He Remembered
According to later versions of the story, the driver eventually learned that there was no gas station at the location where he’d stopped. There wasn’t a diner or even a collection of abandoned buildings. The stretch of desert he remembered pulling into was supposedly empty.
That raised a rather strange question about what he’d seen that night. The buildings had looked real, and he’d been able to drive his truck into the property. He even remembered standing beside the pumps trying to get them working.
The story began circulating as a possible time slip, an experience in which somebody seems to briefly enter another period in history. The old buildings and equipment made people wonder whether the driver had somehow encountered a roadside town as it existed decades earlier.
But the account included something else that made it particularly interesting. The truck supposedly had a record of the stop.
The Truck Recorded 18 Minutes
According to the story, the truck’s electronic logging system showed that the vehicle had been stationary for approximately 18 minutes. Its engine had reportedly been idling during that time, at the same location where the driver remembered stopping.
Electronic logging equipment can keep track of a truck’s movements, including when it stops and how long it remains stationary. That information is recorded separately from whatever the driver remembers. If the reported entry was genuine, it could establish that the truck had stopped in the area.
The equipment couldn’t tell anyone what buildings were outside the cab, of course. But it was an intriguing detail because the driver supposedly had more than his memory to show that he’d pulled off the road.
Unfortunately, the original logging records haven’t been made public. The driver’s identity also isn’t established in the surviving versions of the account, which appear to come from later retellings rather than a documented firsthand interview.
The Dashcam Missed the Stop
Another unusual detail concerned a camera mounted inside the truck. According to the account, it had recorded the highway before the stop and continued working afterward. But the footage from the time spent at the mysterious town was missing.
That meant there was apparently no video of the gas pumps, the diner, or the driver pulling back onto the highway. The very part of the journey that might have shown what he encountered wasn’t available.
Dashboard cameras can lose recordings for several reasons, including power interruptions, damaged files, and problems with memory cards. In this case, however, the missing footage became part of the mystery because of when it supposedly disappeared.
No original dashcam files have surfaced publicly, so nobody has been able to examine what happened to that section of the recording.
Nevada Has a History of Vanishing Towns
Highway 93 passes through some of Nevada’s emptiest country, where the distance between communities can be enormous. Much of the surrounding landscape was shaped by mining operations that once brought thousands of people into remote areas.
Some settlements grew into busy towns with stores, hotels, and other businesses serving miners and travelers. When the mines closed, people moved away, and many of those communities gradually disappeared. Others left behind buildings, foundations, and roads that can still be found today.
Along old highways, gas stations and roadside businesses have also come and gone. A place that once served passing motorists might eventually close when a new road takes traffic elsewhere. Years later, little may remain to show that it was ever there.
That history makes the setting especially interesting. An old-fashioned roadside town appearing in the middle of the Nevada desert wouldn’t necessarily seem out of place at first. The unusual part of the driver’s account was finding a place that apparently belonged to another era and being unable to locate it again.
A Stop That Nobody Could Find
In later retellings, the location was supposedly checked in daylight. The searchers found no diner, gas pumps, buildings, or foundations where the driver said he’d stopped. Even the familiar remains of an abandoned roadside business were reportedly absent.
The story never established who carried out that search or exactly where it happened. No official investigation report or publicly available coordinates have been linked to the account. Those missing details have left people with a particularly strange story and very few ways to investigate it further.
What makes the encounter memorable is how ordinary everything seemed while it was happening. The driver didn’t report meeting strange creatures, seeing impossible technology, or witnessing anything supernatural. He simply stopped at a place that looked decades out of date and discovered afterward that it apparently wasn’t there.
Had those pumps worked, he might even have stayed for coffee.
Nobody knows what he might have found inside.
